TAMIL NADU VETERINARY AND ANIMAL SCIENCES UNIVERSITY, CHENNAI
The Madras Veterinary College (MVC), Chennai, was established in the year 1903. It acquired the recognition of the University of Chennai in 1935 to offer B.V.Sc. degree course. The institution was upgraded into Southern Regional Centre for Post Graduate Research and Education in 1958. M.V.Sc. programme was started in 1960. The college was affiliated to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University during 1974-1976, and from 1976-1989, the college was a constituent unit of the Agricultural University, Coimbatore. In 1989, a separate Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Agricultural University (TANUVAS) was set up and MVC was included as a constituent college of this university. The college is presently offering Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral Degrees in Veterinary Sciences and related areas.
The Bioinformatics Centre (BIC) at Madras Veterinary College, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TNVASU), was established in 1990-91 as part of Biotechnology Information System (BTIS) Network and funded by the Department of Biotechnology. The main function of the centre is to act as a member of BTIS Network for providing information to the interested users on topics pertaining to the Veterinary Science, Animal Science and Fisheries Science. The functions of the centre include, among others, acquisition, creation and development of softwares and databases needed by the users. The centre is well equipped with modern hardwares, softwares and network computer and communication system. The hardware includes Pentium Pcs, LAN, CDNET server with 8 CD-ROM drives, File server with LAN connectivity, VSAT Micro Earth Station connected to NIC, New Delhi, for a direct link to NICNET, NICMAIL and MEDLARS facilities, through INSAT-1D satellite. The softwares include : Unix V 3.2, dBASE IV, Novel Netware 3.12, Windows for Workgroups, Corel Ventura 4.2, CDS-ISIS 3.07, Windows 95, Chemeleon, LEAP 1, etc. Few important databases developed by the centre are: Research findings on Poultry at TANUVAS, etc. Several training programmes/workshops have been organised successfully by the centre to train the researchers in the field of bioinformatics.

The centre has various facilities to cater to the needs of scientists of Veterinary Science, Animal Science and Fisheries Science. The centre has several CD-ROM databases in related fields and is making the required information available to the users, providing e-mail and Internet facilities. The databases available with the centre are : VETCD - Veterinary Science, BEASTCD - Animal Production and Dairy Technology, MEDLINE, ASFA - Aquatic Science and Fisheries Abstracts, BIOSIS - Biological Abstracts, Derwent’s Biotechnology Abstracts, CCOD - Current Contents on Life Sciences, and Agricultural, Biological and Environmental Sciences, FSTA - Food Science and Technology Abstracts and NUCSSI - National Union Catalogue on Scientific Serials in India.
