TAMIL NADU AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, COIMBATORE
The first batch of students was admitted into the Agricultural College at Coimbatore in 1908 for the programme leading to Licentiate in Agriculture (L.Ag.) The Agricultural College and Research Institute was opened by Sir Arthur Lawley in July, 1909. The degree programme in Agriculture was started in 1920 leading to B.Sc. (Ag) with affiliation to Madras University. In 1958, it was recognised as a centre for training. Postgraduates leading to Masters and Doctoral degrees. The second Agricultural College in the state was established at Madurai in 1965. The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) was started in 1971 at Coimbatore, with these two colleges as the nucleus.
The Bioinformatics Centre at the Department of Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, was established in 1989 as one of the Distributed Information Sub-Centres (DISCs) under the Biotechnology Information Systems (BTIS) programme of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, with Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology as the major thrust area. The centre is equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software. The softwares acquired by the centre include Photosynthesis, DTMM, Molecular Genetics Demonstration Programs, CDS/ISIS, IDAMS, Cabbage Expert System, Molecular Biology, Geneism, Cloning, Mushroom System. In a span of eight years of its existence, the centre has emphasized on the development of databanks in the area of specialization. Important among these are databases on crop plants including Pearlmillet, Rice, Red Gram, Cotton and Sesamum with about 10 - 50 characters of the different varieties of each crop listed.

The centre provides services such as offline bibliographic search through CD-ROM, Application Development, Software development for users, training, mathematical modelling, simulation, graphics applications and statistical analysis. The number of external users is growing rapidly. The centre has conducted various manpower training programmes which include workshops, educational programmes and seminars.
